We are saddened to announce the passing of our co-founder David Murphy, MD, FACP.
Dr. Murphy succumbed to his battle against cancer on March 26, 2014.
The clinical and educational history and vision of Exodus were due to Dr. Murphy’s guidance and encouragement.
A pioneer in his industry, he always believed and promoted the treatment of “the whole person” so that everyone can “live life to the fullest” and he instilled that principle in others. Whether it was medication, a specialist, food, or even a pet that the individual needed, they would find their way to them.
As often as he could, Dr. Murphy made rounds in the programs visiting with each client and running unscheduled groups. He was their “rock star” to quote one of our clients. He never pushed but gently encouraged and always ensured that the door was open when they were ready to walk through! Additionally, he phoned the programs a few times a day just to see how things were going and always spent a personal moment with whomever answered the phone.
When speaking to Dr. Murphy, you were the only person that mattered. Even if the conversation started with a question about him, it was always turned around to you. What did you need, what were your ambitions, how could he help?
Because he had a passion for education, Exodus has provided a weekly Continuing Medical Education (CME) to staff and the local clinical community throughout its history. In recent years, he ensured that Exodus was certified with all the CA licensing agencies to ensure all staff disciplines can receive credits for those weekly CMEs. We also hold weekly AA meetings and sponsor other community meetings from organizations.
Dr. Murphy gave us all a strong foundation, providing the tools and skills needed to carry Exodus forward. It will “take a village” to complete the tasks he alone once performed, and it is our duty to honor him by continuing that which he established to ensure that “all is well.”
Since 1989 Exodus Recovery, Inc. (Exodus) has been providing quality psychiatric and chemical dependency treatment services to Southern California communities. Beginning with the management of hospital based inpatient and outpatient programs, Exodus eventually expanded into the operation of mental health intensive outpatient clinics as a contractor with both the Los Angeles and San Diego County Departments of Mental Health. In the last twenty years, Exodus has developed and established several hospital based inpatient and outpatient programs, a psychiatric and internal medicine provider group, and a behavioral health managed care company. For the LA County Department of Mental Health, Exodus has developed and implemented an Integrated Service Agency Program (PARTNERS), an Adult Targeted Case Management Service Program, a Sidekicks Co-Occurring Disorders Program, an AB2034 Program, and an Alcohol and Drug Medi-Cal Contracted Program. Also, through LAC DMH and the California Mental Health Services Act expansion and transformation, Exodus has developed and implemented additional Full Service Partnership Programs, Wellness Center Programs, Field Capable Clinical Services Programs and Psychiatric Urgent Care Centers. In San Diego County Exodus has established and operates two Mental Health Walk-In Assessment Centers and a Full Service Partnership Program.
